Fractures at the upper end of the femur are referred to has hip fractures and generally are a result of low energy injuries such as ground level falls in older individuals with softer bone. There are a number of fixation options available but most patients require surgery to repair the bone

Femur fractures are high energy injuries such as from a car accident.  The femur is the largest bone in the body and requires a fairly severe injury to fracture.  Most cases are treated with a technique call intra-medullary nailing.
