Injuries during sporting activities range from high energy ligament tears during full contact professional sports to an ankle sprain from stepping off a curb. Most injuries in this category can be successfully treated with a staged protocol of rest, immobilization and a structured rehabilitation program. Some injuries involve rupturing of a ligament causing the joint to become unstable. In these cases, surgery to repair the torn ligament is often needed but delayed until the acute inflammatory stage has passed. My treatment protocol is dependent on the age and activity level of the patient, the type of injury and the patients’ expectations as far as future outcome.
